An Introduction: Critical Intervention Mapping

Critical Intervention Mapping, also referred to as Sequential Intercept Model, helps communities determine how individuals encounter and move through system processes. This mapping can be used to map the process of youth becoming involved in justice and child welfare systems and identify intervention points so that an Assessment Center serves as an “off ramp.” Critical Intervention Mapping helps to assess and intervene in problems and engage community participation. It focuses on mapping current processes as well as identifying opportunities that allow an Assessment Center to improve a community's response to youth and families with behavior concerns. 

Attendees will hear from Karli Keator, Executive Director of the National Center of Youth Opportunity and Justice (NCYOJ), on the components and benefits of Critical Intervention Mapping and hear a case study of their work with New York. Specifically attendees will learn how Critical Intervention Mapping achieves the following: 

• Develops a local “map” to show how youth encounter and move through the local service systems
• Conducts a self-assessment to identify gaps and strengths for identifying and responding to youth and family’s needs
• Identifies opportunities for improving responses to youth at risk of systems involvement through an Assessment Center
• Leverages local data to establish action steps for change and identify quantifiable outcomes
